Reimagining Maternal Care: Why Building Better Births Exists
Every family deserves a safe, empowering, and culturally-centered birth experience. Yet too often, women — especially Black and Brown mothers — face a maternity system that feels rushed, disconnected, or even unsafe. In a country with some of the highest maternal mortality rates in the industrialized world, the need for supportive, community-based solutions has never been greater.
Building Better Births was created to change that.
We’re more than an organization; we’re a movement dedicated to compassion, education, and the belief that every birth story matters. Through storytelling, birth justice advocacy, and access to trusted information and resources, we aim to transform how families prepare for pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum journey.
Birth Is Not a Luxury. Support Shouldn’t Be Either.
So many families enter pregnancy excited, hopeful, and ready to create a beautiful birth plan — only to discover how overwhelming navigating the medical system can be. Questions go unanswered. Appointments feel brief. Cultural needs are overlooked. Doulas and midwives remain out of reach for many due to cost or access.
That’s where we step in.
Building Better Births exists to:
- Provide real, evidence-based education that prepares families for informed decision-making
- Amplify the stories of mothers, midwives, doulas, and birth workers who are often unheard
- Create community-driven support systems that close gaps in care
- Elevate solutions that help reduce preventable maternal deaths
- Make birth resources accessible to every family — regardless of income, background, or ZIP code
Because families don’t just need more information; they need connection, representation, and advocates who understand them.
The Birth Box: A Gift of Confidence and Care
One of our signature initiatives is the Building Better Births Box — a curated collection of essentials that helps families feel prepared and supported from pregnancy through postpartum.
Each box includes items designed to educate, empower, and bring comfort during the journey, such as:
- Affirmation cards
- A birth journal
- Evidence-based pregnancy guides
- Postpartum care essentials
- A resource map of local birth professionals
These boxes are gifted to families through donations, community partners, and collaborations with maternal-health organizations. They are our way of saying: “You’re not alone — and your well-being matters.”
